Certain medications are toxic to the ear (ototoxic). Consumption of certain medication may produce tinnitus as a side effect without any damage to the inner ear. Antibiotics, for instance, may be a good treatment option for bacterial infections but it may cause serious problems to a tinnitus sufferer. Medications that may cause or worsen tinnitus include:
Some effects, although dependant on the dosage of the medication, can cause permanent or temporary infections. It must always be at your physician's consent that you take certain medication if you have tinnitus. Instead of taking medication that will complicate your condition, discuss alternative medication which may be available with your health practitioner. Some other medications that may worsen tinnitus include tablets and nasal sprays that people use to unblock their clogged noses and sinuses. Asthma medication may be good in eliminating asthma effects, but for tinnitus sufferers it can only add to their noise intolerant ears. If your tinnitus is caused by the medication you take, the best cure is to stop taking them. Discuss alternative medicines with your pharmacist or health practitioner. Don't take any other medication without your doctor's knowledge.
