Post Nasal Drip (PND)

Daily our mucousal glands produce about 1-2 quarts (+-1 to 2 Litres) of mucus a day. Mucus is responsible to moisten, clean, humidify air, trap foreign particles and fight off infections. They are regarded as our first line of defence. When the production of mucus is more then usual then mucus starts accumulation and becomes thicker and run down the back of the nose to the throat (Post Nasal Drip)

Regular Post Nasal Drip Symptoms include:

  • Mucus at the back of ones throat.
  • Excessive Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • A constant need to clear ones throat
  • A feeling of something being stuck in the back of the throat
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • An excessively sore throat
  • Changes in voice clarity and pitch
  • Thick, clear or yellow nasal mucus
  • Hoarseness
  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach unease and diarrhea in severe cases

If left untreated, excess Post Nasal Drip may lead to other, more serious conditions such as ear infections and/or bronchitis.

What Causes Post Nasal Drip?

The nose, throat, breathing airways and stomach glands generally produce around 2 quarts of mucus daily. This mucus is responsible for trapping and destroying foreign particles, bacteria and viruses.

When the body produces more than 2 quarts of mucus per day for prolonged periods, the mucus starts accumulating at the back of the throat (Post Nasal Drip). When mucus stands for long periods of time, it tends to become thick, infected and irritates throat linings and glands. The body reacts to the disturbance by producing even more mucus, which in turn, aggravates the problem.
Post Nasal Drip

The main causes of Post Nasal Drip are:

  • Colds and Flu
  • Allergies
  • Sinusitis (sinus infections)
  • A deviated nasal septum
  • Changes in weather conditions (Hot to Cold, Dry to wet)
  • Eating certain foods that irritate the glands (for example spicy foods can trigger mucus flow)
  • Hormonal changes
  • Gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD)

Conventional Treatments for Post Nasal Drip

Regular treatments for Post Nasal Drip often depend on the root cause and are designed to mask the symptoms alone making these disappear for a short while till treatment is stopped.

  1. Bacterial post nasal drip is treated with antibiotics.

  2. Antihistamines and decongestants help with short term relief and are often given with steroidal medications for faster treatment. Most decongestants have the potential to dry out the nasal passages and sinus cavities. In response to excess dryness, the body begins to produce thicker nasal mucus which causes a rebound effect.

  3. Other treatments may include mucus thinners such as Mucinex, Saline nasal sprays and humidifiers. These all work to thin nasal mucus but need to be maintained daily. This is because the symptoms will usually return the minute the treatment is stopped.

  4. Drinking large amounts of water will also help to keep nasal mucus thin. Drinking water on a daily basis is not only good for your sinuses but for your overall health as well.

  5. Post nasal drip caused by viruses does not respond to antibiotics and as a result, depend on the body to get rid of viruses.
