What causes constipation?

Constipation is the most common gastrointestinal complaint and about 2 million Americans visit physicians for relief each year. Scientists maintain that lack of fiber in one's diet as well as childbearing may cause constipation.

When food moves through the small intestine into the large intestine, it absorbs large amounts of water and if there is not enough water, the waste becomes dry and difficult to excrete.

What are the other causes of constipation?

Constipation is the most common complaints in children and is associated with poor diet such as inadequate fluids intake, poor fiber and an excessive intake of constipating foods like milk, cheese or bananas. Here are several other causes of constipation:

Constipation is not a disease, it is a symptom and it may (though rare) represent serious nervous and endocrine illnesses such as:

• Stroke
• Thyroid disease
• Spinal cord injuries
• Multiple sclerosis
• Bulimia nevorsa
• Butilism food poisoning
• Depression
• Intestinal obstruction
• Obstipation (Severe constipation caused by intestinal obstruction)
• Typhoid fever
• Gastrointestinal reflux

Medication responsible for constipation

Also, certain medications that contain antacids like aluminum may cause gastrointestinal disorders. Here are a few medication types that may cause constipation:

• Calcium supplements
• Antidepressants
• Blood pressure medication
• Painkillers
• Tranquilizers

A proper diet is a special treatment for bowel malfunctions or constipation. However, some kids may ignore the urge to have a bowel movement.
