What causes constipation?

Constipation is the most common gastrointestinal complaint and about 2 million Americans visit physicians for relief each year. Scientists maintain that lack of fiber in one's diet as well as childbearing may cause constipation.
When food moves through the small intestine into the large intestine, it absorbs large amounts of water and if there is not enough water, the waste becomes dry and difficult to excrete.

Constipation is the most common complaints in children and is associated with poor diet such as inadequate fluids intake, poor fiber and an excessive intake of constipating foods like milk, cheese or bananas. Here are several other causes of constipation:
- Problems with the colon - growths or tumors in the colon area may narrow the bowels and thus constrict bowel movement.
- Poor fluid intake, especially WATER
- Poor fiber in the diet
- Excessive intake of cow milk
- Early intake of cow milk
- Overuse of laxatives
- Pregnancy
- Medications
- Change in diet
- Lack of exercise
- Travel

Constipation is not a disease, it is a symptom and it may (though rare) represent serious nervous and endocrine illnesses such as:
- Stroke
- Thyroid disease
- Spinal cord injuries

- Intestinal obstruction
- Obstipation (Severe constipation caused by intestinal obstruction)
