Q. What effects do nasal polyps have on sinus problems?
|
 |
| |
A. Nasal polyps are abnormal growths of nasal lining caused by chronic inflammation (which may be due to allergies, flu or sinus infections). They occur when the connective tissue matrix that keeps the mucus membrane linings of the nose intact becomes damaged. This damaged lining (which is no longer attached to the underlying tissue) starts filling with water, causing it to sag and cause a "nasal polyp".
Nasal polyps look like peeled grapes that are filled with fluid and can be found anywhere in the sinuses or nose.
If nasal polyps are large, they can cause a blockage of the nasal drainage holes, contributing to the growth of bacteria. This increased bacterial growth may lead to classic sinusitis.
