Arsenicum Album

It is commonly referred to Ars Alb in homeopathic circles. The chemical formula is As2O3. Arsenicum Album is also called Arsenious Oxide or Arsenic. It was well known in the days of old to be a poison and was used as such. It effected amongst other tissues, especially the mucous linings. Because it was capable to do this in large doses it was employed in homeopathy in infra-toxic (not poisonous) doses.

By law homeopaths can only keep a 1 part per million doses as the maximum strength, which cannot cause any toxic effects. The white tasteless and powder arsenic powder is triturated initially and then made into liquid. This makes the dose extremely safe yet medicinally active.

It treats the following symptoms:

• A watery discharge, the discharge is usually thin and causes irritation to the upper lip
• Non stop sneezing that does seem to improve with the sneeze
• Irritation felt in a single spot in the nose. The irritation is as if tickled by a feather which sparks of the sneezing bout
• Sneezing at the change of weather
• Colds that spread to the chest
• Hayfever
• Rhinitis (runny nose) which is worse in open air and improves in enclosed spaces
• Gastric complaints
• Bad breath

Carbo Vegetabilis

Homeopaths commonly refer this remedy as Carbo Veg. It is actually vegetable charcoal. The first proving of Carbo Vegetabilis was done by the founder of homeopathy, Dr Samuel Hahnemann who made it from birch wood charcoal. The wood is burned to redness and the homeopathic remedy is made from the charcoal ash by means of trituration.

It treats the following symptoms:

• Nasal discharge with cough
• Nasal symptoms that come on in moist warm weather
• Ineffectual sneezing
• Constant and excessive tickling in the nose
• Bloating of the abdomen
• Burping/Indigestion
• Bad breath
  
   

Chelidonium Majus

Chelidonium Majus is also called Celandine. It is a plant that has yellow flowers and grows throughout the year. It is most well known to grow in France , Germany and the USA . The mother tincture is made from the whole plant and it is harvested whilst the plant is flowering. The mother tincture is produced in a medium strength alcohol from which higher potencies are made. The mother tincture is used as a phyto-therapeutic.

It treats the following symptoms:

• Fluent coryza with free running mucous
• Pain and pressure within the nasal bones
• Post-nasal drip
• Liver dysfunction
• Indigestion
• Gall bladder dysfunction

Hepar Sulphuris Calcarea

It is also known as Hepar Sulph, Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum or Sulphuret of Lime. The homeopathic remedy is prepared using the middle layer of the oyster shell and sulphur (flowers of sulphur). The first three potencies are prepared via trituration and higher potencies are made in a water-alcohol admixture. It was proven and used by homeopathy's found Dr Samuel Hahnemann in the 1700's.

It treats the following symptoms:

• A sore nose with ulcers
• Exposure to cold air or dry wind causes sneezing
• A runny nose which later becomes thick
• Offensive discharge
• Stopped nose on exposure to cold
• Nasal discharge smelling like rotten cheese
• Inflammation
• Nasal Pain
• Bad breath
• Abscesses, boils

Mercurius Vivus

Mercurius Vivus has several names and also referred to as Mercurius Solubilis, Metallic Mercury, Quick Silver, Mercurius Oxydatus Niger and Black Oxide of Mercury. It has a chemical formula Hg. Hahnemann prepared Mercurius Vivus using Nitric Acid mixed with caustic ammonia to precipitate the mercury. Homeopathic trituration in sugar of milk produces the first three potencies from which higher potencies are made.

It treats the following:

• Excessive sneezing especially on exposure to sunlight
• Nasal linings are raw and ulcerated
• Nasal bones feel tender and swollen
• Mucous is yellow-green or it could be a fetid pus-like discharge
• The nasal discharge burns, and its consistency is too thick to run freely down towards the lips
• Discharge worse in warm rooms
• Nose bleeds at night
• Swelling, infection of all mucus linings
• Mal-odorous breath, nasal discharge

Nitricum Acidum

The chemical formula for Nitricum Acidum is HNO3. It is also known as Acidum Nitricum. The homeopathic potencies are prepared from a solution of Nitric Acid. Homeopaths have used this remedy for a century and a half. Although in its crude form, nitric acid is extremely dangerous and corrosive, it is completely harmless and safe when employed homeopathically. Homeopathic preparation dilutes the acid to an extremely low concentration.

It treats the following:

• Green nasal discharge, often thick and crusty
• Chronic nasal catarrh with yellow discharge
• Nasal complaints with corrosive discharge
• Nasal symptoms with offensive (smelly) discharge

Nux Vomica

This is the poison nut and is also known as Strychnos Nux Vomica and belongs to the Natural Order Loganiaceae. The plant bears a fruit that looks fruit looks similar to an orange. It contains numerous circular, ash grey seeds. The seeds are extremely bitter and contain active principles, Strychnia and Brucia. We prepared the homeopathic tincture from the seeds. The nature and science of homeopathic preparation renders this toxic seed completely non-toxic.

Nux Vom treats the following symptoms:

• Stuffed up nose, especially at night
• Stuffy colds, snuffles which is brought on by dry, cold weather

Sulphur

This is a yellow brittle crystalline substance and found around volcanoes and mines. It is made by trituration for the first three potencies and then made up in alcohol. It is one of the most known and utilized homeopathic remedy. Sulphur is also known as Brimstone and was well described by Hahnemann.

It treats the following:

• Pain and pressure in the forehead
• Heaviness and fullness of sinuses
• Moving or exertion causes pain in sinusitis
• Swelling, redness and inflammation of the nose
• Burning fluent coryza
• Clear acrid discharge outdoors but becomes dry indoors
• Constipation, diarrhea ad other bowel dysfunction
• Gastric complaints
• Halitosis from nasal, gastric or colon troubles.
