Pregnancy and Sinusitis
 

A normal cold or flu is often just brushed off and symptoms taken for granted… leaving any underlying causes untreated and giving them the potential to flair up later on. This can result in a case of recurrent sinusitis and can have many complications. Conventional medications given to treat the symptoms of sinusitis do not usually start at the base of the condition and the relief is more often than not, short lived.

When a pregnant lady who has sinus conditions is examined, a medical practitioner or homeopath has to be extra careful, when choosing the medication or remedy to treat the patient, as the treatment considered could affect the unborn child and have an influence on the unsuspecting pregnant mum’s hormonal system.


The Cycle of Sinusitis
 

When pregnant, the expecting mother can have a hypersensitive immune system that causes inflammation and congestion when the mother encounters allergens such as dust, pollen, dander etc. This inflammation then causes congestion as well as pressure, as the cilia can not move the increased mucus, as efficiently as they were designed to, out of the nasal passages and safely down the throat. This results in mucus becoming stagnant. Stagnant mucus is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. The bacteria feed of this mucus causing it to become acrid (acidic) and infectious.  

The condition of post nasal drip can occur from this point in the condition. Post nasal drip is a condition where mucus drip’s down the back of the throat. The mucus that flows down the back of the throat can cause nausea and gastric reflux, which affects the majority of pregnant women; this could also turn into a condition that is referred to as GERD (gastric esophageal reflux disease).

Foods that help or hinder GERD

  • GERD occurs when incorrect food such as bacon, sausages, normal cheese and fried potato chips or very fatty foods are eaten. These foods should be avoided and substitutes included in ones diet.
    Macon could substitute bacon, cream cheese, substitute normal cheese and so on. In this way the condition will be avoided and no discomfort will be experienced.

Food during pregnancy
 
  • Fizzy drinks are better consumed when the gas has been taken out of them. Use a tea- spoon to take the gas out of the drinks.
  • Starchy foods such as, crackers, rice, tuna, cooked eggs and pancakes will also help control the nausea.
  • Low fiber foods can cause constipation which can complicate the individual’s condition and may be the result of piles during pregnancy.
    Foods such as ice-cream, cheese, pizza and instant mashed potatoes are examples of these foods. These foods should be avoided in order for the patient not to suffer with any symptoms of constipation.
  • Fatty and spicy foods, along with dairy products can also cause the individual to have diarrhea and an increase in mucus production. Apples, bananas, rice and toast will help with the bowel movement of the patient and will help avoid constipation and diarrhea.
  • Toast and black tea with a sprig of ginger or a ginger biscuit is the best to over come the nausea feeling

Each and every individual’s cases differ. This means that everyone’s digestive system will react differently to different foods.

Foods to eat and tips to help avoid nausea during pregnancy:

  1. Cracker e.g. Pro-Vita
  2. Dry Toast
  3. Chew your food thoroughly.
  4. Food smell can provoke nausea. Try and stay out the kitchen.
  5. Vitamin B6 also helps with nausea. Dosages should be monitored.
  6. Ginger is also a good house hold remedy.
  7. Cut out all greasy and fatty foods.
  8. Treat Post Nasal Drip as soon as it occurs

  2. Eat healthy, you diet should be rich in nutrients, fiber and minerals.
